Two Jekabpils robbers are former police officers, third robber is from police response unit "Alfa"

RIGA, Jan 25 (LETA) - Two persons detained this morning for armed robbery in a Jekabpils gaming hall are former State Police employees, who were previously suspended from their jobs in another criminal case, and a third detainee is an employee at the police response unit "Alfa", Interior Ministry's spokeswoman Gunta Skrebele informed LETA. Official investigation will be carried out at the State Police's Zemgale Region Administration, where the two former police officers were employed.


An emergency meeting will take place at the Interior Ministry tomorrow at 8 a.m.

As reported, a police officer was shot dead and several people were injured as the police tried to detain several persons following an armed robbery at a gaming hall in Jekabpils this morning, State Police's spokesman Aigars Berzins told LETA.

The robbers tried to escape and fired several shots at the police in a car chase that followed the robbery, nevertheless, they were detained eventually, said Berzins. Three of the five detainees were injured as they exchanged gunfire with the police, he said.

Police representative Zane Maskalonoka said that, according to initial information, five armed men attempted to rob a gaming hall in Jekabpils at about 9 a.m. this morning, but the guard managed to push the panic alarm button, and State Police officers and security company's representatives were at the scene shortly.

A police chase ensued; one officer was shot dead in the shootout and another two injured, of which one received very serious injuries.

State Police Chief Artis Velss and State Police Zemgale Region Administration's Chief Haralds Laidins have left for Jekabpils.
