The Danish Film Institute's portable film studio Film-Y has arrived in Riga, where it will be installed until May 17th as a part of the celebrations of Riga as a European Cultural Capital 2014. With Danish Film-Y in Riga it is now the city's youngest generation, who are the center of attention for the celebrations of the city as European Cultural Capital 2014. The youngsters will have an unique chance to experience the magical universe of films and explore the role as film-makers by creating a short feature or animation film in the studio.

Film-Y is officially opening Friday the 4th of April at 14:00, and the largest children- and youth center, Rigas Skolenu Pils, is providing the perfect frames for the studio's opening event and stay in Riga. On weekdays the studio is open for schools and on Saturdays families can schedule a time to try out the film studio. It is the first time that Film-Y is installed in the Baltics, and previously it has visited London, Bruxelles, Cluj-Napoca in Transylvania, and Damascus.
A visit at Film-Y

The film studio involves the pupils in the magical world and fantastic process of film-making. At Film-Y the pupils will actively work as an authentic film-crew with both production, writing manuscripts, storyboards, direction, acting, and dialogue. They will learn to put together sound, picture and the importance of action and cutting. The studio's equipment also counts a great old Morris Mascot for recording the scenes, background video-projections, a music- and sound database, and a specifically constructed production-program that allows the films to be made and ready in a few hours. In the end the pupils will with their own eyes be able to see the film they created screened. Film-Y's equipment together with competent young instructors introduce the pupils to the elementary parts of film-making, while letting the pupils follow this process closely - from the conception of an idea to the finishing part and screening. The film studio offers nothing less than a complete journey into the creative inner heart of film-making by combining technology, fantasy, and an introduction to film-production. The project is developed by the Danish Film Institute with a clear goal to engage children and youngsters in the understanding of the exciting, educational, and entertaining act of creating a film under Film-Y's motto - CREATE.UNDERSTAND.EXPERIENCE.
